★ Accrington Library

Accrington Library is a Carnegie library located in the town of Accrington, Lancashire.

In 1904, in the sum of £7.500 was offered a city industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie for the construction of a new library. After the application of additional funds, this offer was increased to £10.000. The building itself was opened in January 1908. It was run by the Accrington Council until 1974, when this role was taken on by Lancashire Council.

1. The development, opening and early years of the building. (Разработка, Открытие и первые годы здания)

Public libraries acts were adopted at the meeting of the city Council June 5, 1899 following a bequest of £500 of John. Edgar Stansfield. The first library Committee was appointed on 9 November this year. The library opened in part of the building occupied by the Directors of the mechanics Institute.

Andrew Carnegies offer of £7.500 funding for the new library came in 1904, when it was accessed, and this amount was increased to £10.000. The building, built and designed by the borough engineer William Newton, was opened on 18 January 1908 Alderman T. E. Higham. The first floor contained a reading room, childrens room and lending Department on the ground floor housed the reference library, the librarians office and a lecture hall that could accommodate 500 people. Several gifts of books were made including the library with a volume of 4.000 William Ashworth, the library of the Institute of mechanics of 5.000 volumes.

A souvenir booklet was issued to commemorate the opening of the library, which explained that the safe-guarded open access system used in the previous library building had to support, and that it was 11.000 volumes available for public library lending and 2.000 volumes in the childrens library. The library also cooperates with the society for the blind to provide the volume, presumably in Braille. It was recognized that there is a weakness in the informational support, but he hoped that the Committee will be the library each year to allocate sufficient funds to fix it. The brochure details the features of the design, including a large stained glass window by H. Gustave Hiller of Liverpool ", which was intended not only to be effective as a work of art, but also to give light in the house."
