★ Adrian Melott

Adrian Lewis Melott-American physicist. He is one of the pioneers of using large-scale calculations to study the formation of large scale structure in the Universe dominated by dark matter. Later, he turned his gaze to the area he calls" astrobiophysics”, considering the various parties that external events in our galaxy may have affected the course of life on Earth, including the analysis of gamma-ray bursts events.

1. Life. (Жизнь)

Born in Moundsville, West Virginia, his early research interests were in physical chemistry, but then switched to study physics at Bethany College in West Virginia.

He took an active part in educational and anti-war movements of the 60s, and was involved in the Unitarian Ministry. He attended school Starr king for the Ministry in Berkeley, California, and was for 7 years a Minister in Tampa, Florida. During this time he continued his interest in physics. In 1977, he entered the physics program at the University of Texas at Austin, where he met and quickly decided that the cosmologist Dennis W. Siamese. He was one of the three groups that initiated numerical simulation of structure formation in the Universe dominated by dark matter.

He received his Ph. D. in 1981, and then doctoral work with the Arthur M. Wolfe in Pittsburgh, with a group of Yakov zeldovich in Moscow, and as a postdoctoral fellow Enrico Fermi at the University of Chicago. In 1986, he joined the faculty at the University of Kansas, where he was still.

In 1998-2001, he was active in the" controversy” around evolution in the curriculum of public schools in Kansas. In 2002 he received the award of the Joseph a Burton forum for his Central role in organizing public support for the return of modern evolutionary biology in the public schools of Kansas

He is married to Gillian and has two sons, Christopher and Jesse.

2. Research. (Исследования)

His work in dark matter focused on the formation of what is called" the cosmic web” of zeldovich pancakes. In 1983, before the existence of such structure was generally accepted, he and collaborators predicted its existence in a Universe dominated by cold dark matter. Later in the 80s, he worked with J. Richard Gott on the topology of large scale structure, and Sergei Shandarin for the unification of hierarchical clustering models with the zeldovich pancake picture, as a description of large-scale structures.

Since 2003, he made a sharp transition into a new field, which started with the analysis of the results of radiation from a gamma ray burst it would be on Earth, and trying to draw in response to recent mass extinction events. This has branched out to study the impact of comets, solar flares and other phenomena. It showed that 63 million years, fluctuations in fossil biodiversity encompasses a variety of datasets and found the keys to his cause, which, however, remains an unresolved problem.

Melott is a member of the paleontological society. He was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society" for a pioneering study of the origin and evolution of cosmic structure” 1996, and won the Joseph a Burton forum for his educational work in 2003. In 2007 he was elected a fellow of the American Association for the advancement of science" For outstanding contributions to cosmological large-scale structure, for organizing public support for teaching the theory of evolution, and for interdisciplinary research on space effects on the biosphere.”
